Why Niche?

Why niche when you can just start a business of any kind? What is the advantage and does it make a difference?

Why niche when you can just sell hundreds of different products? Surely if I sell everything I will make money eventually!

Is there any practical reason to niche marketing anymore and do niches even exist anymore?

Well I guess the answer to the last question, do niches exist anymore really depends on where you are and what subject you are discussing. I will admit that if you are talking about “How To Make Money” online, you will be one of 80 million or so and what was once a niche no longer is.

I can only talk from my own experiences so I will explain the difference niche marketing made to my life and why I am focusing on niches in my blog as an answer to business success.

Why Niche?

Well as you may know my background is in laser technology. I was trained by some of the best in the laser show industry and I have produced hundreds of shows all over the world. The laser industry at professional level still is fairly small when you compare it against other similar industry giants like lights and sounds. There are way more lighting technicians than laser technicians (thankfully).

In 1998 I managed to pull a project in The Philippines and while I was there I noticed that there was no one providing local professional level lasers. There were a couple of people providing at amateur level and every now and then one of the large American companies would come and do a show with their large American prices and so I saw an opportunity to provide my lasers in a country where they were almost none existent.

I actually created my own niche and the demand that went with it.

Now there were lots of people who had looked at The Philippines for lasers and then pulled out because of the low budgets compared with other countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong, but using a low cost base and working originally from a rented condo, I was able to build a level of income that not only gave me a good level of lifestyle, but also provided my with assets and a lifestyle that many people envy.

In fact I live half my life now on the beautiful tropical island known as Boracay!

Well from my own experience it works. The first thing that happens is that you become the authority in your niche. I am known as “The Laserman” in Manila and customers countrywide know that even though I am the most expensive in the country, (yes I have some copycat competitors now!) I am the best.

Secondly, being the first and the best I can command a better price. While my competitors are using cheap lasers from China and know almost nothing about their trade (they even spell laser l.a.z.e.r!) I only use English and American technology which gives better reliability and just looks better all round and my clients know this.

Being the expert I am expected to come up with better ideas, better shows and give a better service and the fact that while my competitors are sometimes charging 10 times less than me I still get enough projects to keep me in the life in which i have become accustomed!

So Why Niche?

You become an authority
You become known as the best
You can charge more
You demand respect
No matter what your copycat competitors do you are still the best
You don’t need to work quite as hard as others.

Does it work? Well for me yes.

No matter what business you are in, you can find those “countries” where there is no one doing the business you are doing.

One of my students was selling a special kind of exercise machine and trying to compete against the giants in here business who focused on body builders and gyms. She was selling a specialized machine that allowed her to look for business in other areas other than the gym giants and she started marketing to the handicapped and the elderly markets that were forgotten by the other companies – with great results.

There are always places you will find that you can ply you special niche to if you are willing to look.

If I was in England I would be just another employee at a laser company, but because I was prepared to go and find an area where I could be in a special niche I am President of my own company (Argon Animation Inc). Now you may not need to change countries as I did, but you will need to be extra-ordinary to really become the master of your niche.
